Neighborhood Resilience + Health Equity Planning for Detroit Neighborhoods

We’re working together for healthy neighborhoods!

This project is about planning for thriving communities that are healthier and more resilient day to day and when facing challenges related to climate, health, and other pressures. This project resulted in actionable steps for neighborhoods that will benefit existing residents and communities of color.

Community input has informed this two year process (concluded in Fall 2023). The focus of this work was the Eastside’s Good Stock area and Southwest Detroit. This work built on existing assets and advocated for resources to support residents.

This project was a collaboration between Eastside Community Network, Urban Neighborhood Initiatives, Good Stock Steering Committee, Southwest Organizing Network, Community Development Advocates of Detroit, and the Detroit Collaborative Design Center. This work was made possible by The Ford Foundation and The Kresge Foundation.

What does neighborhood resilience and health equity mean?

Part of the process was defining these terms with neighbors!

  • Neighborhood resilience is the result of a system that supports residents’ needs. These systems support residents on a daily basis and in emergency.

  • Health equity is achieved when each person has the support, opportunities , and services they need to thrive.

  • Thriving is a state of being when a person is safe, healthy, and has their needs met. Thriving communities are better equipped to face challenges and support community goals.
